Selfridges, Birmingham
The new Selfridges store in Birmingham, designed by Future Systems, has now been completed and opened, to critical acclaim, for both of its iconic design and it's external cladding. It and has created considerable interest both in the UK and abroad. It was featured extensively in all of the industry publications as well as the mainstream press, with several of them featuring it on the front cover.
It has proved a great success for James and Taylor, showcasing our expertise in design engineering complex façades, as well as our ability to resource, manufacture and fabricate an innovative façade solution and deliver it to site on programme.

Rainscreen Cladding
Alphaton Terracotta cladding has continued to be a highly popular and flexible cladding choice for specifiers, and is being used in ever more challenging ways.
Terracotta clad projects continue to feature prominently within the architectural press. The recently completed Putney Wharf project, designed by Patel Taylor and involving the re-cladding of an existing building, was recently featured within AJ. It incorporated multi-coloured (patinated) Pastellrot tiles, in a random bonding pattern.
We have added several new case studies within the terracotta section. One of these is a new Scientific research building for University College London, designed by HLM London. It is nearing completion, and features patinated Beige tiles, set vertically to accentuate their vertical height.
Other new projects range from one of the largest of the New Dockland developments, to a very individual development of fourteen apartments, featuring five terracotta tile colours randomly mixed on site.

CWCT Certification
We are pleased to announce that the Alphaton Terracotta Rainscreen cladding is the first terracotta system to have been comprehensively tested by Taywood Engineering in accordance with the new CWCT requirements for external cladding materials. Test data is available should you require it. For more info select the CWCT page within the terracotta section.
New product news
We have introduced a new range of rainscreen products. "The Senses Range" encompasses two innovative fa
çade systems, in both metal and FSC Hardwood.
They can be used either in conjunction with our terracotta, or together, or independently. They all use the same support structure as the Alphaton System, utilising a proven support methodology.
The first is a range of profiled mirror polished and anodised aluminium cladding, with the second offering a totally unique Hardwood rainscreen system incorporating a range of FSC approved hardwoods.
The FSC is the most widely respected and universally recognised forest-monitoring organisation. It is supported by, The World Wildlife Fund, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, The National Trust and The woodland Trust. The vast majority of Architects, their Clients, Local Authorities and Government organisations, are aware of the FSC and respect their certification.
We have also developed a range of expanded metal mesh and perforated panels.
For more information on all of these product ranges, please select the Metal and Hardwood rainscreen sections on the main menu.
We have also been appointed as UK agents and importers for the Mirage Ceramic Granite rainscreen cladding range. Mirage is an adaptable and lightweight alternative to Natural stone, Slate or Granite, and is supplied with its integral support framework. Large format sizes are available in a wide range of colours and surface finishes. For more information on these products, visit the Ceramic Granite section within the main menu.
James and Taylor - Ireland
We have recently opened an office in Belfast, managed by Keith Redmond, to extend our ability to design engineer innovative fa
çade solutions, to specifiers in both Northern and Southern Ireland. Keith has extensive experience with architectural cladding, using metals, hardwoods and ceramics.

Interbuild 04.
We exhibited earlier this year at Interbuild at the NEC Birmingham, in partnership with Kingspan Offsite. The stand was one of the largest and most impressive at the exhibition, built to showcase a new division within Kingspan to promote offsite fabrication. This recognises the increasing momentum within the industry for modular construction, and offsite fabrication, particularly because of the benefits it offers in terms of construction time. The key areas for this will be for Hospitals, Schools and Key worker accommodation.
The two-storey stand featured a classroom on the ground floor with a hospital ward above it. Both were completely fitted out with desks, beds etc. It was prefabricated in North Yorkshire, transported by road in six modules, and reassembled at the NEC within a 5-day period.
We provided Alphaton Terracotta for the front and side elevation, with the ground floor being used to showcase the range of differing cladding materials and finishes that could be offered to clad one of these modules.
The stand was a great success and was visited by representatives from the Department of Education and also the Health Authority.
We are currently working with Kingspan to produce a comprehensive design manual to include typical constructions details of the stud framework and showing the various options for cladding materials.
